Glossary
Warehouse Identification & Labelling Terms
Whether you’re setting up a new warehouse or looking to improve the organisation of your existing space, understanding the language of warehouse identification is key.
This glossary is here to help you get familiar with the most common terms used in racking labels, signage, and floor marking. By learning what these products are and how they’re used, you’ll be better equipped to make informed decisions that improve efficiency, safety, and accuracy in your operations.
c
- Colour-coded labelsBarcode labels that use colour as a visual code to identify zones, processes, or inventory categories. These types of labels help you to improve speed and picking and storing accuracy while also reducing human error in the warehouse due to their intuitive system.
f
- Floor Identification PlatesIdentification system made of rigid metal plates placed on the warehouse floor to define pallet or storage zones, aisles or traffic routes. These plates offer higher durability than simple floor labels and clearly mark fixed positions. They are made to endure forklift traffic, cleaning, and spills, they help enforce organisation and safety floor plans.
- Freezer grade labelsAdhesive barcode labels made to perform in low-temperature environments, such as cold storage or freezer areas. They remain legible and securely attached even in sub-zero conditions.
h
- Hanging signsHanging signs are used in bulk storage areas either in conjunction with or as an alternative to floor-mounted location plates, particularly when floor access may be obstructed by pallets. These signs are specifically designed to maintain clear identification in areas where floor markings are not consistently visible.
l
- Label holdersClear plastic sleeves are designed to attach to shelving using pre-applied double-sided tape or by clipping onto metal mesh placed over shelving beams. The key advantage of these systems is their flexibility—allowing easy repositioning of inserted tags. This is particularly useful in areas where the type or quantity of stored products may frequently change.
- Line marking / Warehouse line markingPainted lines on the warehouse floor that delineate traffic lanes, storage zones, safety areas, or workspaces. They guide staff and machinery flow and clarify functional divisions in your warehouse. Lines are created using highly durable UV-cured paint which is successfully used in cool-rooms and areas requiring immediate access to the painted markings.
m
- Magnetic labelsReusable labels with magnetic backing that attach to metal surfaces. Locations are printed directly onto the magnetic surfaces, making this type of identification solution ideal for dynamic storage areas where labels need to be moved or updated regularly.
p
s
- Safety SignsVisual warnings or instructions related to health and safety, such as “Caution: Forklift Traffic” or “Wear PPE.” These signs help reduce accidents and support legal compliance.
- Shelf LabelsLarge-format signs that are attached at the end of rack aisles. They show important information such as shelf bay numbers, safety information or directions at a glance.
u
- Upright, column or summary labelsUpright labels are fixed vertically on rack uprights (posts) to clearly display bay numbers or rack IDs that can’t be scanned at a higher level.
w
- Warehouse signsMounted signs that clearly display essential information like bay numbers, section names, or directional instructions. They support rapid navigation, reduce errors, and improve team coordination. For example, end-of-aisle signs are large-format signs placed at the end of racking rows, used to indicate bay numbers, safety info, or other key data at a glance.
